ARPITA + KUNAL

ARPITA + KUNAL

“I dream in Bombay!” was the first thing Kunal Rawal ever told me about himself. We were discussing his inspirations and aesthetic and he told me how the city had been the backdrop to his life and romance with his then fiancé Arpita. That simple statement became the driving force behind the vocabulary for their wedding.

Aprita Mehta and Kunal Rawal- both known names in fashion have been childhood sweethearts- with contrasting personal styles and an eponymous label each- their wedding became a beautiful ‘jugalbandi’ of styles and we played around with materials, thoughts and ideas to create a romantic duet.

THE PARTY

We rarely get involved in the planning of a wedding, but for this, we knew the venue would be important. After scouring all kinds of homes in Bandra, docks and vintage buildings, we stumbled upon this old ice factory in Mumbai’s iconic Ballard Estate that had been renovated into an art gallery. The brick and concrete structure became the backdrop to this Bombay inspired evening- complete with our version of the famous ‘best bhawan’ building around the corner- that housed the bar and party space- truly making it the best house.

 THE WEDDING

The wedding took place in the Taj Mahal ballroom in Colaba. The room was entirely reimagined as an overgrown garden with tall local grass- the main ceremony space stood in the centre sans any structures. We complemented this with vintage urlis, mogras and tuberoses to add beauty and fragrance to the space.
